How AI Is Reshaping SEO Strategy in 2026

Search engine optimization in 2026 looks fundamentally different from even two years ago. Google's AI Overviews now appear on the majority of informational queries, Bing's Copilot answers handle a growing share of Microsoft's search traffic, and users are increasingly comfortable getting answers without clicking through to a website. For businesses that depend on organic search traffic, these changes demand a serious rethinking of strategy, not just tactics.

The AI Overviews Reality

Google's AI Overviews, the AI-generated summaries that appear at the top of search results, have expanded dramatically since their initial rollout. They now cover a wide range of query types: how-to questions, product comparisons, industry overviews, and even some transactional queries. For many informational searches, the AI Overview provides enough of an answer that users never scroll to the traditional organic results below.

This does not mean organic search is dead. Far from it. But it does mean that the metrics and expectations around SEO need to evolve. Click-through rates on informational queries have declined, and businesses that built their content strategy entirely around top-of-funnel informational content are feeling the impact. The traffic that used to come from ranking for broad educational queries is being absorbed by AI-generated answers.

The businesses that are thriving in this environment are the ones that shifted their focus. Instead of chasing volume on informational queries, they are targeting queries where AI Overviews are less dominant: commercial intent queries, comparison searches, location-specific queries, and highly specific technical questions where AI-generated summaries cannot replace the depth of a well-written resource.

Generative Engine Optimization: A New Discipline

Generative Engine Optimization, or GEO, has emerged as a distinct discipline alongside traditional SEO. While SEO focuses on ranking in traditional search results, GEO focuses on getting your brand, content, and expertise cited in AI-generated responses. The two are related but require different approaches.

AI models pull from a variety of sources when generating responses, and the signals they use to determine authority and relevance are not identical to traditional ranking factors. Structured data, clear entity definitions, consistent brand mentions across authoritative sources, and content that directly answers specific questions in a concise, quotable format all increase the likelihood of being cited in AI-generated results.

The goal is no longer just to rank on page one. It is to become the source that AI systems trust and cite when generating answers for your industry's most important questions.

This means that brand authority matters more than ever. Businesses with strong brand signals, those that are consistently mentioned in industry publications, have active thought leadership, and maintain well-structured websites with clear topical authority, are far more likely to appear in AI-generated responses than businesses that relied purely on keyword-optimized content.

What This Means for Content Strategy

The content strategies that worked from 2015 to 2023, publishing high volumes of keyword-targeted blog posts designed to capture informational search traffic, are losing effectiveness. That does not mean content marketing is dead. It means the purpose and format of content needs to change.

Effective content in 2026 serves one of three purposes. First, it targets commercial and transactional intent queries where users are closer to making a decision and AI Overviews are less likely to provide a complete answer. Product comparisons, service-specific landing pages, and detailed case studies fall into this category. Second, it builds topical authority that signals to both traditional search algorithms and AI models that your brand is an expert in specific domains. This means fewer, deeper pieces rather than more shallow ones. Third, it creates original research, data, and perspectives that AI models cannot generate on their own, making your content valuable as a primary source.

The volume game is over. Businesses that publish three deeply researched, original articles per month will outperform those publishing thirty generic posts. AI can generate generic content faster and cheaper than any human team, so competing on volume is a losing strategy. Competing on depth, originality, and direct experience is where the opportunity lives.

Technical SEO Is More Important, Not Less

Some businesses have responded to the AI shift by deprioritizing technical SEO, reasoning that if AI is going to summarize content anyway, site structure matters less. This is a mistake. Technical SEO has become more important in the AI era, not less, for several reasons:

What Businesses Should Do Now

The shift toward AI-mediated search is not coming. It is here. Businesses that adapt their SEO strategy now will be in a strong position as these trends accelerate. Here is what we recommend to our clients:

Start by auditing your current organic traffic to understand which queries are being affected by AI Overviews. Google Search Console data will show you where impressions remain stable but click-through rates are declining, which is a strong signal that AI Overviews are capturing clicks that used to be yours. Use this data to prioritize where to focus your efforts.

Shift your content investment toward commercial intent queries, original research, and expert perspectives that AI cannot replicate. Reduce investment in generic informational content that AI Overviews handle well. This does not mean abandoning informational content entirely, but it does mean being more strategic about which informational topics you pursue and ensuring that every piece adds genuine value beyond what an AI summary provides.

Invest in your brand's authority signals. Get mentioned in industry publications, participate in relevant communities, maintain an active presence on platforms where your expertise can be demonstrated, and ensure your website clearly communicates your areas of specialization. Brand authority is becoming the most durable SEO asset.

Finally, treat GEO as a complementary discipline to SEO, not a replacement. Optimize your content to be cited in AI-generated responses by using clear, concise answers to common questions, maintaining comprehensive structured data, and building the kind of topical authority that AI models rely on when selecting sources. The businesses that master both traditional SEO and GEO will capture the most value from search in 2026 and beyond.
